The computer users should have basic information about this very important computer program running a computer system. Only then, you will be able to use the computer properly.
In this article we will share with you the following information related to the operating system.
What is Operating System?
The special master program which help computers to connect with various devices and programs for their work is called the operating system. The short for of Operating System is OS. The operating system acts as an intermediary between the user (users) and the computer system. It explains our instructions to the computer. Other software programs and hardware are handled by the Operating System.
Types of Operating System
The development of the operating system was progressed with the development of computers. As the computer got developed, so did the Operating System itself. The Operating System is divided into several categories. But, we will know some of the major types of Operating System here.
1. Single-user Operating System
The Operating System is called a single-user operating system to provide the facility to only one user at a time. In this, many users cannot work at one time. The example of single user operating system is DOS, WINDOWS 3X etc
2. Multi-user Operating System
The Operating System which provides facility to multiple users simultaneously is called Multi-user Operating System. It provides the facility for hundreds of users to do their work simultaneously. The example of multi user operating system is UNIX sever, Virtual Memory System (VMS) etc
3. Multitasking Operating System
An operating system that allows a user to run many different programs simultaneously is called a multitasking operating system. On this operating system, you can do many tasks at one time. MS Windows 2000, Linux and IBM's OS/390 are the example of Multitasking operating system.
4. Multi Processing Operating System
To allow a program to run on more than one CPU, the operating system is called Multi Processing Operating System. This allows the same program to run on more than one CPU. Windows NT, 2000, XP are the example of Multi Processing Operating System.
5. Multi Threading Operating System
A multi-threading operating system is an operating system that manages its use by more than one user at a time and also manages multiple requests by a single user without multiple copies of programming running in the computer. Windows Server 12 is the example of multi user operating system.
6. Real Time Operating System
Real Time Operating System (RTOS) is the operating system (OS) that provides instant processing to the input given by the user without buffer delay. The purpose of which is to serve real-time applications that process data. For example Windows Operating System.
Operating System Requirements
The operating system connects the user and computer. This Master Program (Operating System) controls and operates the entire computer and gives the user ability to work on the computer easily.
Functions of operating system
An operating system typically consists of a kernel that manages the computer's hardware, as well as the basic system programs used to boot and configure the operating system. The main function of operating system is
- Booting
- Memory Management
- Loading and Execution
- Data Security
- Disk Management
- Process Management
- Device Controlling
- Handling I/O operations
- Providing Interface
- major operating systems
The major operating systems which are most commonly used are MS Windows, Apple mac OS, Linux, Android and Apple's iOS.
